Professional makeup artist is using makeup applying it to the skin to transform or change the faces, the parts of the body, or all body for the needs of play or movie.
Looking back in a history, we can see that the art of applying makeup goes back 6000 years. Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs has employed servants who were specially trained for applying cosmetics to make them appear like gods.
A makeup artists who are working for the theatre productions, and for television and movies, are important members of a team, because he/she gives their best to transform the actor into the desired character, and to change the appearance in an allotted time frame.
They have take care to reflect the setting, period and situation of an actor’s role. Sometimes, they need to make an actor look younger or older, which sometimes includes making prostheses or masks of different materials. They must take care of the effects stage lighting, or they need to analyze the performance distance between the stage and the audience and the lighting.
And of course they need to evaluate the script, to know everything they need for the period or culture which is presented, to prepare plans for each scene, and because they have to change make up very fast, they have to know that it is a right makeup in a right part and moment. They must change makeup in exactly the same way every time, for every play because the makeup show must be almost identical, and this is very difficult and needs really big skills.
Theatrical makeup artists should also be skin care experts, to prepare the skin for makeup applications and to give advices to actors about keeping the skin fresh and rested after so many makeup’s, and to be prepared for some potential allergic reactions or any negative effects caused by makeup.
A makeup artist who works in a theatre or in a film, needs to have many skills, but they usually need to specialize in some types of makeup and application techniques as theatrical, special effects, prosthetics, light bending high definition etc.
So, makeup artists, is really difficult and important profession. Makeup artists need to be creative, to have many skills, they need to be able to work as part of a team, and very often to work overtime, and under high pressure. And they have to collaborate with everybody in the team, including directors, actors, light designers and especially with costume designer and hairdressers.
Today, they can write on their blogs or web-sites, for the magazines, to share their experience and give advices, or even write their own books, and to promote themselves alone.
